Green design strategies, often based on new technological systems development, could be rethought for application on existing built heritage, as design solutions for nature and construction integration, transforming entire neighborhoods into green infrastructures, that are part of a wider system of ecological networks. Some green design innovative devices, in relation to the sustainability of the built space, have been tested in the eco-district design, to build quality green spaces integrated with the buildings. This type of design devices, if applied to the existing built heritage, could create new green lungs within the urban organism, transforming the built spaces into a system of innovative green infrastructures and redeveloping abandoned places in the city. Policies and strategies in eco-district projects can be reinterpreted to establish the parameters that measure the sustainability degree of an intervention and that can be applied to verify the efficiency of the renaturalization and green design strategies in urban environment.
