The present paper starts from a view of text genre competence as a metacompetence, and stresses its importance in foreign language teaching at a university level. A very useful means to develop such competence is corpora analysis: in particular, this contribution illustrates the use of German monolingual corpora with the goal of enhancing the students’ awareness of intralinguistic variation.

Abstract
