Historically, according to Leite (2016), the status of the interjection as a word class was either rejected or accepted by grammarians. This paper aims to describe the treatment of interjec-tion in eleven Brazilian grammars published in the 19th century and included in the Corpus de textes linguistiques fondamentaux (CTLF), explaining the criteria used for its definition and classification, and pointing out possible innovations in its treatment. To this end, an analytical-interpretive analysis will be carried out, using some of the criteria drawn up by Auroux (1988) and cited in Leite (2016, p. 209-210): morphological, semantic, functional, metalinguistic, and their subdivisions.
